Farmers are invited to attend a farm walk at The Barna Way, an eight-hectare eco-social farm just outside Ballybunion, Co Kerry.

The farm, owned by environmentalists Rena Blake and Lisa Fingleton, integrates biodiversity, social inclusion and creativity in its approach to sustainable living and climate action.

Initially, the farm was in organic horticulture and experimented with different livestock systems. However, in recent years, it has moved from traditional farming models to one that invites the community on to the land.

Fingleton said they are reimagining what it means to farm in Ireland.

“The traditional way of farming isn’t necessarily working for all small Irish farms,” she said.

“One day we made just €5 at the market and realised something had to change. Now, instead of going out to the community, we’re inviting the community to us.”

Social farming

The couple participates in the Kerry social farming programme, as well as creative climate action projects.

The walk will talk about the current programme Brilliant Ballybunion, which engages locals in growing food, protecting habitats and imagining a more resilient future in the face of climate change.

Participants will also see traditional hay meadows, native woodlands and habitats for nature.

“No matter how small you are, you can still actively work to create change and make things better. We share this planet with other creatures and we need to learn how to cohabit together,” said Blake.

Network and communications officer for Farming for Nature Sarah Coonan added: “They are an inspiring example of how to effect climate action at the community level, as well as provide valuable habitats for nature on their farm.

"It is a great opportunity for other smallholders to see what's possible with just a bit of creative thinking.”

The farm walk will take place on Saturday 26 July from 11am. Participants are asked to book their tickets in advance online.
