Carbery prides itself on the low-key and calm way it goes about its business. However, there seems to be something in the water at present.

In Barryroe, chair Michael Sexton was challenged and unseated by Johnny O’Brien. Sexton had only been elected last year, beating O’Brien by a single vote.

It’s believed to be the first time in Barryroe’s 100-year history that a sitting chair has been unseated after a single year in the saddle. O’Brien is now set to be chair for Barryroe’s centenary year.

It will be his third spell in the chair, and the second where he assumes the Carbery chair, which rotates among the four member co-ops. Meanwhile, in Drinagh, Jerry O’Neill won the vice-chair election, beating Marguerite Crowley by the narrowest of margins.
