The Department of Agriculture is inviting tenders for the provision of children’s and young person’s farm safety initiatives.
The Department made the call with the aim to promote best practice and bring about behavioural changes to minimise the risks to the safety of children and young persons on farms.
Over the past 10 years, 17 people under 18 years of age have died on Irish farms, accounting for almost 10% of all fatalities on farms.
Groups and organisations have been asked to develop and deliver projects which address young people’s safety on Irish farms by assisting teachers in educating their students about the potential dangers associated with farming and agriculture.
€200,000 budget
Minister of State for Farm Safety Michael Healy-Rae said: “The Department is providing funding of €200,000 from its dedicated farm safety budget for 2025, with an option to extend the contract for a further four years.
“This tender will support initiatives that have the potential to make a real impact on farm safety and reduce the number of fatal and serious non-fatal incidents involving children and young people on Irish farms.”

In addition, projects which promote awareness of safety on farms at shows and events are also being sought. These projects must be delivered by November 2025.
Successful initiatives will cover one of three themes: promoting farm safety awareness among primary school pupils; promoting farm safety awareness among second level students (with specific programmes for transition year and agricultural science students) and promoting children’s and young person’s safety on farms at public events and shows.
Tenders
“This request for tenders will support initiatives that promote a lifelong culture of farm safety from a young age,” added Healy-Rae.
“The successful initiatives will make an important contribution to changing attitudes to safety on Irish farms, not only by increasing farm safety awareness among children and young people, but also by encouraging conversations about farm safety among all generations in farming families.”
The deadline for submissions will be at 2pm on Monday 14 July.
