This four-week-old Shorthorn-cross heifer calf made €1,050.

The calf trade is continuing to go from strength to strength across the country, with prices remaining very high for the time of year.

A super trade for suck calves was witnessed on Saturday in Carrigallen Mart, Co Leitrim.

There were 160 lots on offer, with great prices paid across the board for all breeds of suck calves.

A stylish roan Shorthorn heifer calf topped the prices, making €1,050.

Exporters dominated the trade, with good levels of farmer buying activity also.

Aberdeen Angus

A large number of Angus calves were entered in the sale, with the majority of strong three- to four-week-old Aberdeen Angus calves crossing the €600 barrier, with a few of the stronger bull calves making over €700 each.

Hereford calves were also a good trade, with €700 paid for a strong five-week-old Hereford bull calf.

A small number of strong Friesian bull calves were also sold, with the majority of these making over €450/head.

Runners and reared calves were also a strong trade, with €1,100 being paid for a March-born Aberdeen Angus bull calf and €650 being paid for a reared late-November Friesian bull calf.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, Carrigallen Mart manager Helen Kells said: “Numbers of calves coming out are holding up well, with an increasing number of reared calves reappearing in the last two or three weeks."

This March-born Aberdeen Angus bull calf made €1,100.

These pair of March-born Aberdeen Angus calves made €710 each.

This four-week-old Hereford heifer calf made €670.

This late November-born Friesian bull reared calf made €650.

This March-born Friesian bull calf made €510.
