Dowra Mart held its weekly cattle sale last Saturday. Numbers remain small in marts, but Dowra still had 280 cattle sold last Saturday.

Heavy cattle were in big demand, with factory feeders and factory agents in attendance keen for stock.

One of the highlights of the sale was six Charolais heifers weighing 625kg selling for €2,980/head (€4.77/kg).

Bullocks also met a very strong trade, with a Charolais bullock weighing 725kg selling for €3,500 (€4.82/kg).

Dry cows topped out at €3,660 for a Charolais cow weighing 725kg. Another dry cow weighing 790kg hit €3,580.

Exporters were also eager for stock, with bull weanlings between 300kg and 450kg highly sought after. A Charolais bull weanling weighing 370kg sold for €2,400.

Heifer calves also met good farmer demand, with a 280kg Limousin heifer weanling selling for €1,600 (€5.71/kg).

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, Dowra Mart’s Terry McGovern said: “I would like to thank everybody that helped identify the people who carried out a break-in to the mart on Wednesday 16 July. The people have been identified and the gardaí are dealing with the matter.”

Dowra Mart holds weekly sales on Fridays (sheep) on Saturdays (cattle).
