Weanlings

There was a red hot trade for weanlings at the annual Christmas Cracker sale in Markethill Mart last week. Kieran Mailey reports.

The Pedigree Breeders Council is calling for a fully independent technical review into the accuracy and the impact of the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation star ratings on the national herd.

The young weanlings left in the shed have started to thrive since the older calves were sold.

While lighter calves struggled slightly, quality types of calves continued to command top dollar at Granard’s weanling sale on Monday night.

Excellent weather conditions for the time of year have eased yard work for Tommy Moyles and have delayed the last of this year's weaning.

Currently it is costing us around €100 each week to feed these weanlings, and while we rarely sell calves under 300kg, there is an excellent trade for light hairy heifers.
