Just over 120 head of stock passed through the ring in Headford Mart on Saturday last, with buoyant demand seen for all types of stock, but particularly spring 2024-born store cattle.

The sale was the first for the mart on the Martbids system, which is now in place for bidding online.

Quality continental-type bullocks in the 300kg to 400kg bracket saw prices clear €5/kg, with up to €5.75/kg being paid for one Charolais-cross weighing 315kg that sold for €1,810.

Finished types were dominated by dairy-beef-crosses, with these lots selling from €4.07/kg up to €4.58/kg, with the price being dictated by fleshing and kill-out ability. A small number of heavy continental bullocks sold from €4.58/kg to €4.92/kg.

Heifers were a similar trade, with the greatest bite being seen for light store cattle and weanlings aged between nine and 16 months.

Quality heifers of this class sold between €4.91/kg and €5.87/kg, with the top price per kilo being a nine-month-old Charolais-cross heifer weighing 265kg that sold for €2,200.

Forward type and finished Hereford and Angus-cross heifers weighing between 440kg and 530kg sold between €4.15/kg and €4.50/kg, with little variance between stores and finished lots.
