A smaller sale to the week previous at Ballinrobe Mart put a good floor under the prices of both cull ewes and spring lambs, with wet weather the day before turning some sellers off presenting lambs.

Hoggets were few in numbers, with the transition slowly being made towards spring lambs.

Lambs sold from €109 to €205/head, with heavy lambs over the 50kg mark commanding prices above €190 in the main, with one select well-conformed lot breaking the €4/kg barrier, with €170 to €192/head buying the majority of factory-fit and butcher lambs.

Price per kg varied from €2.26/kg right up to €4.02/kg paid for a pen weighing 51kg which sold for €205/head. Spring lambs sold to an average of €180.62/head or €3.50/kg.

Strong cull ewes

Cull ewes were strong money as well and with the nature of the mart’s clientele, quality varied from hill ewes lacking flesh to well-finished heavy lowland ewes that commanded top dollar.

Prices varied from €70/head for these lesser-type hill ewes to highs of €236/head for better types. On a price-per-kilo basis, ewes sold from €1.41/kg to €2.83/kg, with an average of €2.11/kg, equating to an average price per head of €151.27.
