The term ‘small farmer’ gets thrown around quite a bit but I’ve always thought it was very vague.

I now see the Scots have closed in on who it refers to, as for their suckler scheme small herds are classed as those with 10 cows or less.

This means they are exempted from a new measure where payments are made provided a cow’s calving interval is less than 410 days.

Now that there’s somewhere with a clearer definition on what a small farmer is, I must tell my friend who is convinced it’s anyone under 5’4” who has applied for the Basic Income Support for Sustainability.
