With an unprecedented volume of timber available for harvest, the North East Forestry Group said it is essential that farmers get a number of quotes when harvesting windblown or standing plantations in order to secure the best possible price.
“It is strongly recommended to obtain a minimum of three quotes from different buyers, with category size and pricing clearly outlined. Additionally, consider whether the contractor will chip and remove brash, as this can greatly assist with replanting efforts.
“A written contract is essential and should include clear details of the deposit and payment schedule before any operations begin.
“Timber should not be allowed to leave the site without a signed, written contract in place that specifies payment terms, volumes, and transport arrangements. Do not give verbal permission for harvesting or haulage to begin,” it said.
Deposit
“The payment schedule should include a deposit before felling begins, and ideally, staged payments based on weighbridge dockets or volume assessments.
“Retain weighbridge control where possible, and request copies of dockets directly from the haulier or sawmill, not just the buyer.
“Contractors must also provide proper documentation before starting work, including valid insurance details, appropriate operator certificates, a risk assessment, and proper site signage. Remember, the forest owner is liable if anything goes wrong,” the group advised.
