Youngstock Podcast: building a successful business from bale handlers
Gary Abbott talks to Kerry native owner and founder of JM Agri Design Joe Moynihan, a company now known best for its elephant trunk-style bale handlers.
On this week’s episode of the Young Stock Podcast, Gary Abbott talks to Joe Moynihan of JM Agri Design based near Tralee, Co Kerry.
Almost 10 years ago, after studying agricultural engineering at Tralee IT and gaining experience working in research and development, with manufacturers in Australia and here at home in Ireland decided to set up his own manufacturing business.
Having always been involved in the family farm at home, Joe found himself applying his engineering skills in manufacturing a bale handler to overcome the issue of lifting sagged bales.
It was at this point that Joe decided to design a handler, whereby a trunk came down across the bale.
From there, prototypes were built and interest grew. JM Agri Design was then set up in 2015 and from there the business has since grown, with thousands of the firm's TR bale handlers working worldwide.
Joe discusses everything from growing up to studying at IT Tralee to then working abroad and his experiences along the way, as well as the daily challenges of running a business in rural Ireland.
