Metribuzin is a pre-emergence herbicide used on potatoes. \ Odhran Ducie
This year a number of plant protection products will go off the market and will have to be used up in 2025. Potatoes are most affected by active ingredient bans this year.
Metribuzin is the active ingredient in Sencorex flow which is a common potato herbicide used in Ireland.
Metribuzin is also contained in the popular winter barley herbicide Firebird Met.
Any product containing metribuzin must be sold by retailers by 31 August 2025 and be used up on farms by 24 November 2025.
Flufenacet one of the other main ingredients in Firebird also looks set to be banned by the EU in the next two years, but is not banned at present. Dimethomorph and mepanipyram could not be sold after 28 February and must be used up by 20 May 2025.
