Northern Ireland Agriculture Minister Andrew Muir said he raised the issue with senior UK government minister Steve Reed.
The €40m Biomethane Capital Grant scheme will provide 20% grants towards the cost of building a new anaerobic digestion plant or upgrading a biogas plant, up to a maximum of €5m.
Anaerobic digestion plants which avail of the €40m capital grant scheme must have their plants built by next year, which may be too tight for most, writes Stephen Robb.
Anaerobic digestion plants that avail of the 20% capital grant will be allowed to export 80% of the biomethane gas under the terms of the new grant scheme.
AD plants can secure up to €5m of a capital grant or 20% of the total construction cost under the scheme, but must be operational by December 2025.
After the Department of Agriculture’s €40m AD capital grant scheme is spent, the Department of the Environment will introduce a new biomethane support programme from 2026 to 2030.
The €40m fund aims to support the construction of the first handful of new anaerobic digestion plants in Ireland.
