Danone to roll out 6,500 biogas plants on dairy farms

French food giant Danone has signed a memorandum of understanding with Sistema.bio to install 6,500 biogas plants on dairy farms by 2030, supporting methane reduction on-farm. This initiative will be deployed in several locations across the world, where Danone operates, starting with Mexico, India and Morocco.

In a statement, it said that biogas plants are a proven manure management solution to mitigate methane emissions.

“These systems transform livestock waste into renewable biogas and organic fertiliser,” it read.

Sistema.bio supplies prefabricated, modular biodigester systems and also provides training, financing, and ongoing support to farmers.

Danone currently works directly with over 60,000 dairy farmers around the world and is undertaking the initiative in its effort to decarbonise the dairy sector and improve livelihoods for farmers in emerging markets.

Sneak peek

Until now, biomethane production has only been viable at large scale — but that’s set to change. The Irish Farmers Journal got an exclusive look at a new small-scale system in development, designed to allow farmers produce biomethane on-farm. More details to come ahead of its launch in the autumn.
