Changing dynamics in NI lamb market
Across the first half of 2025 the number of lambs and hoggets slaughtered at NI factories is down 7.3% on 2024, and 22% on 2023 figures, to total 169,197 head.
However, a significant number of sheep are exported from NI live, either for direct slaughter or under a store or breeding certificate.
A total of 235,374 head have been exported from NI in the first half of 2025 and of this, 154,744 are for direct slaughter. Most of these (131,187 head) have gone to the Republic of Ireland (ROI).
However, in recent weeks the number going to Britain for direct slaughter has increased significantly. Across the first half of 2025 a total of 14,823 has been sent to Britain for slaughter, with most of this trade (12,226) happening in the last five weeks. Over the same period, 15,499 have been sent to ROI for processing.
