Something novel and catching the attention of many at Kuhn's recent pre Agritechnica press event was the brand-new GMD 15030 plain disc butterfly mower combination. The brand new machine features what is believed to be the widest cutting width of any mounted mower on the market at 14.5m.

Despite its cutting width of 14.5m when combined with a 3.1m front mower, the rear combination is compact in transport mode and uses the same architecture as other butterfly mowers from Kuhn.

However, a double folding cutter bar design sees it able to fold to 3m and under 4m high for transport.

In order to be compact, the rear mowing unit is equipped with four 3.1m Optidisc Elite cutterbars (two on each side), each of which carries seven discs. The design uses patented gearboxes to transfer power efficiently to the outer cutter bars while also serving as a pivot for following ground contours and compact folding for transport.

A patented hydraulic cylinder between each of the two mower beds on either side keeps the optimum distance between the beds to avoid vanes of uncut grass while making sure the pressure is balanced across the entire working width.

The unit uses a double folding technique to fold to a road transport width of 3m.

Operator can choose between the simple and user-friendly KFA 12 control box or the Isobus mower control kit.

With the kit, all machine functions can be controlled via the tractor terminal and joystick.

The unique gearbox is also the pivot for the two mowers.

Each rear bed is equipped with Kuhn’s lift-control system and non-stop safety system which allows each side to move back and upwards in the event of encountering a foreign object.

The rear unit weighs in at 3,800kg while 230hp is said to be the minimum power requirement.
