Gaeilge has never been cooler. From writer Manchán Magan to rap group Kneecap and Paul Mescal on the red carpet, it is hard not to notice the grá and energy around using our native tongue. It’s a resurgence that has been felt in the midlands town of Athlone through the pop-up Gaeltacht community. Gaeltacht Átha Luain meet regularly and arrange a wide variety of events where people can speak Irish together. Recent events include a ‘ciorcal comhrá’ [conversation circle], slow music circle, and Irish language classes. See athlonegaeltacht@gmail.com

Spoonfuls is the new baby of the jam and spread brand, Folláin, a familiar feature on many kitchen tables across the country. Spoonfuls is a fruit and seed breakfast topper that comes in two flavour combinations – blueberry, cherry, chia and pumpkin seeds, and strawberry, blueberry, cacao nibs and mixed seeds. There are no refined sugars, grape juice is used to get the sweet flavour. See follain.ie

Poetry Corner

The Curlew

By Willie O’Byrne, Moneystown, Wicklow.

Through mists of time, your annual sojourn to wetlands, heralding summer days

Filling our hearts with each lamenting call unique,

unmatched by any other

Our hearts missing a beat,

each time you called.

Your haunting call is

but a memory

Has homo sapiens

not been wise

In caring for our guest

Did he take away what was yours through time.

Alas, memory is fading

No longer remembering the sound of your lament

Heart strings pulling

homo sapiens

To make amends and

re-create what was lost

Your kind did not wait for homo sapiens

He is only wise after the stable door has closed.

Would that the hands of

time return to days

when man and nature

were intertwined

His ears were full of sounds

And yours alone stood

loud and clear

And yet again, once more,

to hear your lonely call.
