Farming on the country’s hills and mountains is not for the faint of heart. Winters are more severe, the land challenging, schools a more distant drive.

But there are, of course, positives, too: beautiful countryside, peace and quiet, closeness to nature.

A striking hill farm has come on the market in Co Cork. It’s 331ac near Inchigeela, in one block, with a nice farmhouse and a useful yard.

The holding is in the townland of Derryriordane South and it’s available from CCM Property. It’s for sale by private treaty and the guide price is in the “region of €850,000”.

The farm is the last stop on a cul-de-sac, about 11km out from the Inchigeela village. It’s a 30 minutes’ drive to Macroom, 20 minutes to Ballingeary and 30 minutes to Bantry.

Hill farmers treasure any lowland or green land they have. This farm has approximately 60ac of good, green land, most of it near the house and yard.

Mountain grazing

Another 50ac of the farm is steep and rocky, providing rough grazing for sheep. The rest of the holding is good mountain grazing suited for cattle and sheep.

The 331.01ac is in one block. The house and yard are in in the centre.

The farm is bounded by a river on two sides and it’s fenced for sheep. There are lovely views from the top of the farm.

At one point this farm had dairy cows. Then there were suckler cows. Latterly, it was run in sheep by the well-known and respected Jerry O’Shea, now deceased. It’s now being sold by the representatives of his estate.

The farmhouse and yard are together. There are a number of steel sheds which date back to the 1970s, with round and apex roofs. There is also a more modern shed which was used for sheep operation.

The farm has valuable green land, much of it near the yard.

There are cubicles for cattle in one of the sheds, in good condition and there are sheep handling facilities in the yard.

The house is very traditional in style and probably dates back to the mid to late 1800s.

It is a one-and-a-half storey house with rooms on the ground floor and bedrooms upstairs in the roof space.

It’s about 1,200 sq ft in area. It has three bedrooms, a kitchen with a stove and a sitting room. The house is in good structural condition but now requires modernising, according to a new owner’s tastes. Just outside the house, there are a number of outbuildings suited for storage use.

The yard has sheep handling facilities and useful sheds.

The property will be of interest to suckler and sheep farmers. It could be well suited for an organic operation.
