European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said the agreement on the deal was “truly a historical milestone”.
Ursula von der Leyen and her trade commissioner Maroš Šefcovic have flown to South America to conclude a trade summit over the controversial agreement.
The proposed deal would allow for free trade between the EU and South American countries such as Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
The Mercosur trade deal has been agreed since 2019, but it looks like it will begin the ratification process early in the incoming European Commission's term.
