The Gendarmerie Nationale – a branch of the French armed forces which polices smaller towns and rural areas – has caught and detained a network of agricultural GPS thieves.
In a statement, the authorities said that it had recovered 40 pieces of stolen agricultural equipment including 34 GPS units, estimated to be valued at over €1.5 million.
The armed unit also seized keys of agricultural machinery of different brands and various tools that have been used by the gangs in crimes.
The bust took place on March 4, and was part of a large-scale operation.
Authorities in France have said that this follows several months of French farmers reporting agricultural GPS units being stolen from their machines.
Photographs of the recovered items indicate that it was mainly New Holland and Case IH equipment that were hit, with thieves stealing receivers, guidance controllers and display screens.
The systems stolen ranged from the upper-end kit down to some more basic guidance systems.
There also appears to be a number of implement control screens recovered.
