Just days away from Europe’s largest outdoor event, hundreds of thousands of people across the country are getting ready for the Ploughing, writes Anne O’Donoghue
Not to get doom and gloom from the off, but you don’t need me to tell you there are many challenges facing Irish farming at the moment. That said, there are also plenty of opportunities.
The National Ploughing Championships is one of them.
It’s a chance for the farming sector and agricultural industry in this country to showcase the pivotal role it plays in Irish society across three days at Europe’s largest outdoor event.
Through its sheer vastness, the Ploughing highlights the economic importance of farming, as well as the social fabric it weaves throughout towns and villages across the country.
For one week in mid-September all eyes are on farming. From politicians and the president to rural and urban dwellers alike.
It’s a chance for farming to have its story told and its voice heard on home turf.
Literally. This supplement is a guide to the Ploughing, taking place next week from 17 to 19 September in Ratheniska, Co Laois.
You’ll find a map of the trade stands, information on how to get there and advice dotted throughout on what to see.
Also, let’s not forget the reason for this event in the first place – the ploughing match! Grace Hoare has spoken to some competitors who are gearing up for the championships.
So, pack for all weather, make the trip out to the ploughing fields and don’t forget where you parked the car. I’ve made that mistake before and it’s not fun.
Finally, and some would say most importantly, make sure you visit us at the Irish Farmers Journal stand.
See you in Ratheniska.
