Pedal for a difference

For the past 31 years, cyclists of all abilities have put wheel to tarmac in Galway to raise funds for Croí, the heart and stroke charity. This year, the annual Croí Corrib Charity Cycle will take place on Sunday, 8 June, and registration is now open. Cyclists can choose between a 47km route which takes you through Moycullen, Oughterard, and back to Galway city while the more seasoned in the saddle can opt for the longer 107km trek which takes in lots of Galway’s coast and countryside. BEALTAINE by Mary O’Donnell

Sweet scent of sceach, signal of summer.

A cuckoo calls, searching for a mate - urgent staccato sounds.

It’s Bealtaine in Boolahalla - ancient milking place,

pasture of transhumance.

In another place, in another time,

my Mayo mother, reared on piseógs

feared the cuckoo’s call might bring mí-ádh if heard

before her morning meal in Mayo in Maytime.

Léitheoireacht i nGaeilge

Former Laureate na nÓg, Áine Ní Ghlinn and children's author and illustrator, Paddy Donnelly, retell a classic fairy tale in Na Trí Mhuicín. €12.95.

Two Irish language books have made the shortlist for KPMG Children’s Books Ireland Awards (19 May), reflecting a growing Gaeilge appetite for the wee ones. Our junior readers will really enjoy the stories of the farmyard

animals in the two shortlisted titles. Na Trí Mhuicín (€12.95) brings the classic fairytale The Three Little Pigs to life trí Ghaeilge while Bearradh Gruaige d’Eonín (€8.95) is about a lamb called Eoinín who needs a haircut.

Faking it ...

Firming Gradual Self Tan Cream, €29.99.

Why spend hundreds of euro sizzling in the sun abroad? Much better to invest in a fake tan that is cheaper, safer and is easy to use. There are plenty of affordable Irish fake tans on the market including Tan Organic, Dripping Gold Luxury Tan and Cocoa Brown that will reliably give you the glow you’re after. Remember that fake tan does not protect you from the sun, so still pop on some protection. May is Skin Cancer Awareness month and page 12 carries a story with an important message to protect your skin and wear sun cream when you are spending time outdoors.
