This six-week-old Charolais bull calf sold for €1,400.

Ennis Mart held its weekly sale of calves and weanlings on Tuesday. There were just over 270 animals on offer, including 50 suck calves.

The majority of the weanling bulls on offer were top-quality continental stock with U grading potential.

The majority exceeded €5/kg, with a few of the lighter weanlings crossing €6/kg.

Sample prices included a November 2024-born Charolais-cross weanling bull weighing 365kg and selling for €2,150 (€5.89/kg). A September 2024-born Limousin-cross bull weighed 265kg and sold for €1,580 (€5.96/kg).

Weanling heifers

Weanling heifers were a great trade, with a lot of online bidders driving the prices. A large number of stylish weanling heifers crossed €5.50/kg.

A standout lot included a pair of April 2024-born Limousin-cross heifers weighing 290kg selling for €1,770 apiece (€6.10/kg).

There were 50 suck calves on offer. The calves averaged €693 each, with the six-week-old Charolais-cross bull calf in the video at the top of the page selling for €1,400.

Suckler outfits

Top price went to a January 2015-born Charolais-cross cow with an AI-bred Charolais-cross bull calf at foot, selling for €4,190. She was served again to the same bull.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, mart manager Martin McNamara said: “Weanling heifers were a phenomenal trade, with farmers buying up heifers in fear of there being a scarcity later on in the year.”

This November 2024-born Limousin-cross weanling bull weighed 310kg and sold for €1,660 (€5.35/kg).

This September 2024-born Limousin-cross bull weighed 265kg and sold for €1,580 (€5.96/kg).
